Key specs at a glance

Figures come from retailer listings of the Sony HT-S40R. Ask our team to confirm what's in the box and the exact connections.

What's in the box

The soundbar, a subwoofer, two rear speakers and a remote, per retailer listings. Ask us to confirm.

What it's good at

The HT-S40R's main advantage is its wireless rear speakers, so you don't have to run speaker cables across the room. You get real surround channels, more power than the HT-S20R, and Bluetooth for music.

What to know

Wireless here means no signal cable. The rear speakers still need a power socket, so plan the placement. It supports Dolby Audio, not Dolby Atmos. For Atmos and more power, look at the HT-S60.

About the watt rating

Power ratings are a manufacturer's total output figure. They help you compare systems of the same type, but they don't tell you how good or how loud a system will sound in your room. Speaker quality, the number of speakers and the room size matter as much.

Who it's for

Buyers who want surround sound with fewer cables.

Living rooms where cables to the back are awkward.

Movie and sports fans who want more power than the HT-S20R.

How it compares

The HT-S20R, also in our range, has wired rear speakers and 400W. The HT-S60 has Dolby Atmos support and 1000W.

Check your TV first

Most TVs connect with a single HDMI cable to the soundbar's HDMI ARC or eARC port, or with an optical cable. Tell us your TV model and we'll confirm the best connection.
