Key specs at a glance

Figures come from retailer and Sony listings of the HT-S20R. It's an older design than Sony's newer systems. Ask our team to confirm what's in the box and whether it includes wall-mount brackets.

What's in the box

The soundbar, two rear speakers, a subwoofer, a remote and the speaker cables, per retailer listings. Ask us to confirm.

What it's good at

The HT-S20R gives you real rear speakers and a subwoofer, so films and football fill the room with surround sound. Setup is simple: the cables are colour-coded, and the soundbar works with the TV remote through HDMI CEC. A Bluetooth connection lets you stream music from a phone.

What to know

The rear speakers and the subwoofer connect by cable, so you need to run cables around the room. It uses Dolby Digital, not Dolby Atmos, and it's an older design. For wireless rear speakers, look at the HT-S40R or the HT-S60.

About the watt rating

Power ratings are a manufacturer's total output figure. They help you compare systems of the same type, but they don't tell you how good or how loud a system will sound in your room. Speaker quality, the number of speakers and the room size matter as much.

Who it's for

Buyers who want real 5.1 surround at an affordable price.

Movie, series and football fans.

People who don't mind running cables to the back of the room.

How it compares

The HT-S400, also in our range, is a simpler 2.1 system. The HT-S40R has wireless rear speakers and more power, and the HT-S60 adds Dolby Atmos and 1000W.

Check your TV first

Most TVs connect with a single HDMI cable to the soundbar's HDMI ARC or eARC port, or with an optical cable. Tell us your TV model and we'll confirm the best connection.
