Refurbished Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 8 Buying Guide in Kenya: 50W Sound, Bluetooth 5.2, Stereo Pairing, What to Check and How to Spot a Fake

4 min read•Updated 23 October 2026

Some speakers are bought for sound, some for looks, and a few for both. The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 8 belongs to that last group. With its curved, fabric-wrapped body, it looks more like a sculpture than a gadget, and its 50W output is meant to give a lounge or a bedroom party a full, warm sound. Because new units cost a lot, many Kenyan shoppers meet it first as a refurbished Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 8: the same design and tuning, at a lower price, with a few things you need to check.

This guide explains what the Onyx Studio 8 is, what its published specifications mean in daily use, what "refurbished" should mean, where it is strong and where it is not (including water), how it compares with the Onyx Studio 7 and other speakers, what to test on delivery and how to spot a fake. Specifications are per Harman Kardon's published information, and we confirm each unit. Calculations are our own, from stated assumptions.

We are City Gadgets Kenya, at New Alnoor Exhibition, Second Floor, Shop C7, Accra Road, Nairobi CBD, with same-day delivery in Nairobi and next-day delivery outside Nairobi. Prices change, so message us on WhatsApp for today's price.

The short version

  • The Onyx Studio 8 is a premium wireless speaker with a sculpted look, 50W RMS output and Bluetooth 5.2, per Harman Kardon.
  • Battery: up to about 8 hours of playtime and about 5 hours to charge, per Harman Kardon. A refurbished battery may be shorter, so ask how it was tested.
  • It weighs about 3.5 kg. It moves around the house easily, but it is not a backpack speaker.
  • Wireless Stereo Boost pairs two Onyx Studio 8 speakers for wider stereo, which makes it easy to start with one and add another.
  • No water rating is listed in Harman Kardon's published specifications, so treat it as not waterproof.
  • Refurbished means used, then checked and tested. Expect possible cosmetic wear and an older battery.
  • Test it properly on delivery, and ask about the warranty and what is in the box before you pay.

What the Onyx Studio 8 is

Harman Kardon is part of Harman International, a company with a long history in home and car audio. The Onyx Studio line is its premium portable and wireless speaker range. The Onyx Studio 8 is a rechargeable speaker that connects over Bluetooth, and Harman Kardon publishes these figures for it:

SpecificationPublished figure
Output power50W RMS
Frequency response50 Hz to 20 kHz (-6 dB)
BluetoothVersion 5.2
Battery playtimeUp to about 8 hours
Charging timeAbout 5 hours
WeightAbout 3.52 kg
MicrophoneBuilt-in dual microphone for far-field voice clarity
Stereo featureWireless Stereo Boost, pairing two Onyx Studio 8 speakers
ColoursBlack, blue, champagne

Harman Kardon's published page does not list the drivers, a water-resistance rating, the ports or the dimensions. We therefore confirm those for each unit instead of assuming them.

Why people buy refurbished

The biggest drop in a product's price happens in its first months, and a good refurbished product sits after that drop. For a speaker like this, buyers tell us:

  • The same sound for less. The design and tuning are identical to a new unit.
  • A premium brand within reach. A new Harman Kardon is hard to justify for many budgets.
  • Less waste. A good speaker deserves a second owner.
  • Light wear is acceptable. A small scuff on a fabric speaker rarely affects daily enjoyment.

The risks are real too: an older battery, hidden damage, missing accessories, a vague warranty or a unit that is not what the listing says. A good seller reduces them, and this guide helps you ask the right questions.

What "refurbished" should mean

A fair meaning is:

  1. A previously used product is collected or bought.
  2. It is inspected inside and out where needed.
  3. It is tested: sound, Bluetooth, battery, charging, buttons and microphone.
  4. Faulty parts are repaired or replaced where possible.
  5. It is cleaned and described honestly, including cosmetic condition.
  6. It is sold with clear terms: what is included and what warranty applies.

It should never mean a product sold as new, a unit with an undisclosed fault or a story that cannot be checked. At City Gadgets Kenya, we sell this speaker as refurbished, test it, describe its condition and confirm the contents and warranty before you pay.

Sound: what 50W RMS and 50 Hz to 20 kHz mean

RMS power. RMS describes continuous power, a more honest figure than peak power. A 50W RMS speaker can play steadily at high volume without distortion, within its limits. Loudness also depends on the drivers and enclosure, not only on watts. A useful rule from our calculation: doubling amplifier power adds about 3 decibels (dB = 10 times the logarithm of the power ratio), and a tenfold increase adds 10 dB, which people hear as roughly twice as loud. So a 50W speaker is only slightly louder than a 25W one with similar efficiency.

Frequency response. "50 Hz to 20 kHz (-6 dB)" says that the speaker reproduces sounds from about 50 Hz (a deep bass note) up to 20 kHz (the top of human hearing), with a drop of 6 dB at the ends. For a portable speaker, 50 Hz is a good low limit: it means audible, musical bass, though not the sub-bass of a large subwoofer, which can go well below 40 Hz. In practice, expect warm mid-range, smooth treble and firm bass.

Distance matters. In open space, each doubling of distance reduces the sound level by about 6 dB, from our calculation. A speaker that sounds right at 2 metres is noticeably quieter at 4 metres.

Harman Kardon's sound character. The brand is known for a warm, balanced sound that flatters vocals, which is why the Onyx range suits gospel, Afrobeats, bongo flava, benga, rhumba, pop, jazz and podcasts.

Room size and volume

  • Bedroom or study: ample at low volume.
  • Living room: fills it at moderate volume.
  • Covered balcony or patio: good for a small group.
  • Small gathering: adequate in a lounge. For bigger events, use a larger party speaker.
  • Big hall or open compound: not designed for it.

Bluetooth 5.2: what it gives you

Bluetooth 5.2, per Harman Kardon, is a recent version, and in daily use it means:

  • A stable connection with a typical range of around ten metres in open space. Walls reduce it.
  • Automatic reconnection after the first pairing.
  • Efficient power use compared with older versions, though real battery life still depends on volume.
  • Audio delay. Bluetooth adds a small delay that is invisible for music, but can make voices lag on some video sources. Many phones and apps compensate.
  • One phone at a time. To switch phones, disconnect the first.

Your phone must also support the features to benefit from a newer version. Interference from Wi-Fi routers and crowded rooms can cause dropouts. Move closer or change position if so.

Wireless Stereo Boost: starting with one, adding another

Harman Kardon describes Wireless Stereo Boost as pairing two Onyx Studio 8 speakers wirelessly for a wider stereo sound. The idea is simple: with one speaker, you hear a single source. With two, one plays the left channel and the other the right, and the sound stage widens across the room. Practical notes:

  • Both speakers must be Onyx Studio 8 units, per Harman Kardon's description. Do not assume other models will pair.
  • Place them a few metres apart, with you roughly in the middle.
  • Buying a refurbished pair can cost much less than a new pair, so a refurbished second unit is a smart way to expand.
  • Ask us about a matching colour and compatibility before you buy a second one.

Battery: the heart of any refurbished portable speaker

Harman Kardon quotes up to about 8 hours of playtime and about 5 hours to charge. As with all battery claims, playtime assumes moderate volume. At high volume with heavy bass, expect less.

Why it matters more in a refurbished unit: every rechargeable battery loses capacity over time. A previous owner may have charged it daily, left it in a hot room or used it hard. Even if the speaker looks perfect, the battery may be at some fraction of its original capacity. We cannot state a precise figure for any particular unit, because it depends on the unit's history. We test the battery before sale and tell you what to expect.

Ask any seller:

  1. How was the battery tested?
  2. How long does it play at moderate volume?
  3. Was the battery replaced?
  4. What does the warranty say about the battery?
  5. Can I return it if the battery is poor?

A 5-hour charge time means you should plan ahead: charge it the evening before an event, not an hour before. For all-day events, keep it plugged in. Our best power bank in Kenya guide covers power on the move, though you should check with us whether this speaker charges from a power bank.

Water: no published rating

Many portable speakers advertise waterproofing. Harman Kardon's published specifications for the Onyx Studio 8 do not list a water-resistance rating. That does not prove it is vulnerable, but it means you should not assume protection. Our advice:

  • Treat it as not waterproof.
  • Keep it away from rain, splashes, pools and wet surfaces.
  • Use it indoors or under cover outdoors.
  • Never charge it if any moisture is present.
  • Wipe spills at once and let it dry fully before use.
  • If you want a speaker for the poolside or a rainy barbecue, ask us about water-resistant options, including the refurbished Onyx Studio 7, which Harman Kardon lists as waterproof.

Being honest about this protects you from a costly mistake.

Design, size and weight

At about 3.5 kg, per Harman Kardon, the Onyx Studio 8 is a substantial speaker. The weight comes from a solid enclosure, drivers and a battery, and it helps the sound by resisting vibration. It is portable in the sense that you can carry it from room to room or to a friend's house, but it is not a clip-on travel speaker. Carry it with both hands if you can, and place it on a stable surface.

On a refurbished unit, check the fabric for pulls, stains or tears, the body for dents and the base for scratches. Light marks are normal. Large dents, loose parts or damp patches are not.

Onyx Studio 8 vs Onyx Studio 7

We stock both as refurbished units. The comparison, based on Harman Kardon's published information:

The honest summary: if you will use the speaker outdoors where water is a risk, the Studio 7 is the safer choice. If you want a newer design for indoors and plan to pair two speakers, the Studio 8 is attractive. Ask us for the current stock and price of each.

Onyx Studio 8 vs other speakers

Versus a small travel speaker. A travel speaker is cheaper, lighter and easier to carry, but it has limited bass and volume. The Onyx Studio 8 sounds much fuller. If you listen on the move, travel speakers are practical. If you listen at home, the Harman Kardon is a step up.

Versus a JBL PartyBox. Our range includes JBL PartyBox models such as the PartyBox 120, 130, 520 and On-the-Go 2. They are built for events: louder, with lights and microphone inputs. The Onyx Studio 8 is more refined for home. For a hall or compound, choose a PartyBox.

Versus a soundbar. A soundbar sits under a TV and improves dialogue and movies. See our best soundbar in Kenya guide.

Versus a desktop system. A wired desktop system such as the Logitech Z906 5.1 in our range offers more speakers for fixed use.

Using it with a TV, laptop and phone

Phone. Pair and play. Music apps, YouTube and podcasts all work.

Laptop. Pair over Bluetooth. For video calls, choose either the laptop's microphone or the speaker's in the sound settings, to avoid conflicts.

TV. Many TVs can send audio over Bluetooth, but some add delay that puts voices out of sync. For proper TV sound, a soundbar is better. Our best 55 inch TV in Kenya guide explains why built-in TV sound is thin.

Console. Bluetooth delay makes fast games awkward.

What to test the day it arrives

  1. Compare the speaker with the description and photos.
  2. Charge it and watch the indicator. Remember it takes about 5 hours per Harman Kardon.
  3. Pair it with your phone and play a song you know well.
  4. Listen at low, medium and high volume. Listen for crackling, rattling or distortion.
  5. Play a bass-heavy track and a clear vocal track.
  6. Test both channels with a stereo test or a song with distinct left and right parts.
  7. Test every button.
  8. Make a short call to test the microphone.
  9. Test any wired input with a cable if you have one.
  10. Check battery behaviour by noting how long it plays at a fixed volume, and tell us if it is far below what we told you.
  11. Look for water marks inside the grille or around the ports.
  12. Contact us at once about any problem.

Common problems and what to do

  • Short battery life: a sign of ageing. Tell us.
  • Crackling at high volume: can be a damaged driver or a low battery. Test at lower volume and on mains power.
  • Bluetooth drops: move closer, forget the device in your phone and pair again.
  • Will not charge: try another cable and charger, check the port, and tell us.
  • One side quieter: could be a driver problem.
  • Buttons stick: possible wear. Tell us.

How to spot a fake or misdescribed Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 8

Premium speakers attract copies, and refurbished listings can mislead. Check these ten points:

  1. Branding. Genuine printing and badges are crisp and evenly placed.
  2. Model label. It should show the model name and a serial number. Make sure it is the Onyx Studio 8 and not another model sold under a similar name.
  3. Weight. Harman Kardon lists about 3.5 kg. A very light unit is suspicious.
  4. Build quality. Seams should be neat and the fabric tight.
  5. Sound. A copy often sounds thin, with weak bass and distortion at moderate volume.
  6. Features claimed. Test the microphone and stereo pairing if the listing says it has them.
  7. Colour. Check that it matches the listed colours: black, blue or champagne.
  8. Condition claims. "Like new" on a heavily worn unit is misdescription.
  9. Price. A price far below market for a premium speaker should raise questions.
  10. Seller and warranty. Ask for a receipt and written terms that name the seller.

Every speaker we sell is tested and described honestly. If you want to check anything, message us on WhatsApp.

Questions to ask any seller before you pay

  1. Is this a genuine Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 8, and can I see the model label?
  2. How was it tested, and what was tested?
  3. What is its cosmetic condition? Can I see photos?
  4. How long does the battery last at moderate volume?
  5. Was the battery or any part replaced?
  6. What ports does this unit have?
  7. What is in the box?
  8. What is the warranty, who honours it and what does it cover?
  9. Can I return it if it fails in the first days?
  10. Will I get a receipt, and is M-Pesa accepted?

Who should buy a refurbished Onyx Studio 8?

Style-conscious listeners who want a speaker that looks as good as it sounds.

Home users with a living room, bedroom or covered balcony.

Hosts of small gatherings who want rich sound without a big event speaker.

Buyers planning a stereo pair, starting with one and adding another.

Value-minded buyers who want a premium brand at a lower price.

Not ideal for: poolside or rainy outdoor use, very loud events, or buyers who want a fresh battery and a full new warranty. Ask us about other options.

Example scenarios

A flat in Westlands. A buyer wants a speaker that looks good on the shelf. The Onyx Studio 8 fills the living room and doubles as decor.

A couple planning a stereo pair. They buy one now, then a second refurbished unit later, and pair them for wider stereo.

A student with a laptop. She wants better sound than her laptop's speakers. The Onyx Studio 8 improves music and films at her desk.

A garden barbecue. The host realises that the speaker has no published water rating, so keeps it under the veranda, and asks us about a splash-proof alternative for the pool.

A first-time refurbished buyer. He tests the unit on delivery, finds the battery matches what we said and keeps it.

Where to put it: getting the most from 50W

Placement changes how a speaker sounds almost as much as the speaker itself. Keep the Onyx Studio 8 on a solid shelf or table, roughly at ear height when you sit. Pushing it into a corner or against a wall boosts the bass and can make it boomy, so pull it a little away if the low end sounds heavy. Do not shut it inside a cabinet, which muffles the sound, and keep it away from windows in strong sun, sinks and stoves. If you later add a second speaker for stereo, place the two a few metres apart and sit roughly in the middle, so the left and right channels spread across the room. Because the speaker is heavy, a wobbly shelf can rattle at high volume.

The honest limits of a portable speaker

A 50W portable speaker is impressive for its size, but physics sets limits. Deep bass needs moving a lot of air, and a compact enclosure cannot do that like a large subwoofer, so very bass-heavy music at party volume will ask for more than it can give. Stereo separation from one box is limited, which is why pairing two speakers is attractive. Battery power is finite, so loud, bass-heavy playback drains it faster. And a wireless speaker depends on your phone: low phone battery, a weak signal or a notification sound can interrupt music. Knowing these limits helps you enjoy the speaker for what it does well, which is warm, clear, room-filling sound with style.

Using it for calls and voice assistants

The built-in dual microphone, described by Harman Kardon as designed for far-field voice clarity, lets you take calls through the speaker and use your phone's voice assistant from a distance. In a quiet room it works well, and people on the other end can hear you from a few metres away. In noisy rooms or with music playing, clarity drops. Your phone carries the call, so its battery and signal still matter. For important meetings, a headset or a proper conference device is more reliable.

Hearing and neighbours: sensible use at home

A speaker that goes loud tempts you to use it loud. Long periods of high volume can tire your ears, so choose a level where you can talk comfortably. In flats and estates, bass travels through walls and floors more than treble does, so lowering the bass in your music app or moving the speaker away from shared walls helps the neighbours. Good habits keep the speaker enjoyable for everyone.

After the sale: support and repairs

A refurbished product should come with a clear route for help. If your speaker develops a problem, contact us first and have your receipt ready. Our repair page explains the process. If you decide to upgrade later, our sell page explains how trade-ins work for your old gadgets.

Refurbished pairs: a sensible way to get stereo

Because Wireless Stereo Boost pairs two Onyx Studio 8 speakers, a refurbished pair can cost far less than a new pair, which makes stereo a realistic goal. If you plan this, buy the first speaker now, enjoy it, and ask us about a second unit later. Matching colours and similar battery condition help the two behave alike, so tell us your plan early and we will try to match the units.

Care guide

  • Charge it before long storage and keep it at a middling level.
  • Avoid heat. Never leave it in a car or in sun.
  • Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth, and dry.
  • Keep it dry.
  • Use a stable surface, since it is heavy.
  • Do not drop it.
  • Use a sensible volume.
  • Store it away from extreme humidity.
