Western Digital is one of the two companies that dominate storage, and its drives are the default for backups, photo and video archives, and console expansion. The brand also owns SanDisk, which covers memory cards and flash drives.

The colour-coded internal range is worth understanding: Blue is general desktop use, Black is high performance for gaming and editing, Red is built to run continuously in a NAS, and Purple is designed for surveillance recording. Buying the wrong colour is the most common storage mistake.

For anyone shooting video, the practical advice is simple — keep two copies. External WD drives are the cheapest insurance you can buy against losing a shoot.

Which Western Digital to buy

Match the drive to the job: an SSD if you are editing or expanding a console, a spinning My Passport if you just need cheap capacity for backups. And never keep only one copy of anything you cannot replace.
